„ The emperour of Atlantis” by Victor Ullmann and „The voices of Holocaust” by Edelman (premiere)
Ulmann (1898-1944) – Czech of Jewish descent- is one of the most important composers of modern times. Mentored by Arnold Schönberg. At the begginig of the II world war he was in Czekoslovakia. He was sent to the concentration camp in Theresienstadt. He didn’t stop composing and created sonatas for the piano, songs for the choir and many song cycles to the Jewish and Hebrew lyrics and the poetry of Hölderlin, Meyer, Trakl, Rilke.
„The Emperor of Atlantis” is his most famous work, created to the libretto of Peter Kien. It was never performed at the camp, and its author was deported to Auschwitz. The sheet music was found in London after many years. The premiere took place in Amsterdam in 1975. The significance, the content, the spiritual message and the artistic level contribute to the exceptionality of the work. This horrifing piece, also because of the circumstnaces under which it was created, is a big challenge to its producers.
„The Emperor of Atlantis” fills the first part of the the evening in Krakow Opera. The second part, tied with the first one by the topic and by the way it is staged, is the oratory „The voices of the Holocaust” (Kolot Min Hashoah) by the American of the Jewish origins, David Eddleman.
